I have little cuts and burns all over my hands courtesy of my (not so good) cooking prowess and my brandy new knife set. My cuticles are a mess. My toe nails haven't been painted in ages and, to be honest, could stand to be attacked by a clipper and a file. My skin is in dire need of some TLC and my hair is in desperate need of a conditioning treatment. So you know what that means...
AT HOME SPA DAY!!!
My favorite day ever! Yeah!
I'm a big goofball and love to mix my own beauty treatments. Nothing complicated. I just dig some stuff outta the fridge and pantry and start stirring.
My favorite concoctions are:
Egg white and lemon juice mask
Hot olive oil hair mask
Sugar and lemon face/body scrub
Milk, honey, and baby oil bath
After I put the kiddos to bed I get to mixing. First, I stick about 1/4 c of olive oil in the microwave. (I have long hair. You can use much less if your hair is shorter.) If I'm mixing an egg yolk into the oil then I only warm it slightly so I don't scramble the egg. I flip my hair over the sink and work the warm oil into the length of my hair. I used to go all the way to the root, but trust me, it's HELL to wash out so I don't go there anymore. Once the oil is worked in I secure my hair into a bun on the top of my head. I then wrap my head in a plastic bag and then a towel over that. The goal being to trap your body heat so that the oil can work it's magic.
Then I mix the scrub. Juice 1/2 lemon and simply stir in sugar. The thickness of the paste is up to you. Just remember, the thicker it is, the less it will drip all over. Sometimes I add vitamin E oil to this, sometimes I don't.
The egg white mask is simply egg white beaten with a bit of lemon juice. Yep, it's runny and gross, but I read about the wonders of it in a magazine when I was a teenager and have been using it ever since.
I draw my bath, add in some milk, honey, and baby oil and soak. After decompressing in the tub, I shower and use the body scrub. Once out of the bath/shower, I put on the egg white mask and proceed to tame my finger/toe nails.
So now I am buffed, soaked, masked, scrubbed, oiled, and polished.
Life is good.
Any homemade beauty rememdies you use?

I have long hair, too, and I swear by the olive oil! You can make a good facial scrub by adding a little baking soda to your regular face wash. It works!
Hi,
I have thick, long, curly hair and sometimes I add a touch of honey (1/8-1/4 tsp) to a handful of leave in conditioner and run it through my hair. Makes the curls spring and it smells good too!
One more tip: Boil 2 cups water, add 1 cup apple cider vinegar. Let cool. Rinse through hair as a clarifier if you have styling product build up. You can feel the difference!
i use a paste of oatmeal, brown sugar and water for a body scrub...for hair, i use mashed avocado.
like dingo, i use a hair clarifier, too: equal parts of water and vinegar, to be used after shampooing and rinsing out regular shampoo (with about 2 TB of baking soda added in). now, to find a leave in conditioner that i can add honey to!
i hope you get some r & r.
i am going to have to try that stuff!
i have thick, curly hair...is the oil going to weigh it down?
awesome stuff...
did you have fun?
xoxo
When I was a teenager I found out that if you peel that white skin from the inside of the egg shell out oh so carefully and place it on your face, the t-zone in particular, then let it dry until it is almost hard... Peel off and it pulls all the crud out of your pores like those little strips do.
Thanks for these tips! I'll have to try them. Alas, I have nothing of substance to add, but might I suggest a link to this post so we can check back again and again for your tips, as well as your comments?
Avocado and honey for the hair, once a week, similar to the way you do your olive oil thing. I don't do the other stuff but I LOVE to saok my poor feet in warm water and scrape all the dead skin off with this thing that looks like a miniature cheese grater. Then slather on foot cream, even Bag Balm or Vaseline.
Oh heck, I am sooo not a spa gal, but this post makes me want to be!
Obviously, I have no fabulous recommendations.
I rinse my hair with vinegar once a week. It is THE. BEST. hair softener and conditioner ever. It strips all the yucky buildup off your hair and makes it as fresh as a baby's!
I make my own sugaring goo for hair removal. Like Nads, only cheap. :-)
You are full of great ideas... and your commenters are too.
I am taking notes. Everyone is so convincing and I need some good R&R. Thanks for the beauty tips!
That sounds delicious! Hope you enjoyed your evening of pampering.
I'm trying this egg white mask, and if I have an allergic reaction..I'll take pictures for you! haha. I need to try a homemade mask, because I'm generally allergic to most products.
that sounds marvellous!
i love lemon and honey in my foot spa, and the classic cucumber slices on the eyes thing.
Peroxide and baking soda to whiten my teeth. It's nasto, but it does work.......
Your so cool though. I wanted you to know that. You are like super popular but you still come visit me!!!!!
I wish you were a closer bloggy friend!!!
I'm not a spa girl either. But your recipes sound yummy. I have thick, coarse, wavy/curly, short hair and use product everyday. I shampoo and condition everyday too. Maybe I should try some of your ideas.
I douche with vinegar and water! :) KIDDING!
But seriously, I've heard olive oil under the eyes can seriously reduce wrinkles. When I say I've heard it's only because NOTHING works for under my eyes!
I am intrigued by the olive oil hair thingie.. I wonder how that would turn out on my own hair. I'm half black/half Portuguese.. and my hair is half of each... thick, European and then curly in part, coarse... Any thoughts?
ps. I noticed that you've been stopping by my blog. I'm flattered that you comment. I love your blog! It's taking me some time to catch up on my reading and commenting though!!
I have amazed that you come up with these beauty ideas on your own - very cool! I need me some beauty concoctions, but I don't have any homemade ones! Thanks for the beauty tips - BEAUTIFUL!
See you soon - Kellan
hi nikki,
sounds like peace. good girl.
and you made me giggle out loud when i imagined for a wee split second that you were putting SCRAMBLED eggs in your hair. tee hee. kathleen
What amazing tips with great ingredients! I love that everything is right there in your pantry; no weird, hard to access stuff. Simple is great!
Now I just have to grow my hair out again...
That sounds like a day I need!
I made sugar scrubs for all my female relatives for Christmas. I used brown sugar, olive oil, orange and nutmeg essential oils and some other spices.
I think that's why I'm pregnant!
Love these tips! I need a home spa big time & I've got a big ol jug of olive oil awaiting.
I use it as a massage oil when I teach baby massage classes--it works great!
I make nothing - it's too much like cooking. But I'm totally impressed with yours - wanna come over?
Wow. That's a great idea. Who needs Elizabeth Arden?! I'm totally gonna steal some of these.
Wow, never even thought about home treatments, I always just so excited to get away from the house! These are some great ideas, and all these commenters have some too. Thanks everyone, maybe I will try a little homemade pampering!
Fabulous ideas, especially for a low buck girl like myself. The couple of times I had facials at the spa I totally broke out the days after. I used to do the egg white mask when I was a teen and I'm tempted to try it again. Great comments, too! Lots of great tips and tricks.
*squint* Dang, I can't see for the gleam coming off your freshly scrubbed self!
Love homemade stuff like that!
(and think of the $$ you saved!)
You've got bling!
There are no more at home spa days for since I have:
1. Turned my hair green
2. Cut my cuticles too short that I gave myself an infection.
3. Burned my eyebrow trying to wax myself.
But the sugar body scrub sounds wonderful!!
Instead of egg and olive oil, mayo has both already mixed. Go easy though, it too is a pain to wash out ;)
I've heard that beer on red hair brings out the shine...never actually checked that out though.
My toenails were fugly today too, but I took care of them this morning.
I LOVE the home spa recipe!!! I am so glad I found your blog, its great!! I am new to blogging and would love to talk more. I have some food recipes on my new blog called "I Overcooked My Family". Maybe we can trade hehe
strawberries crushed up whiten teeth. Strange, but true.
I'm so totally jealous of your relaxing day of beauty. Sounds like fun!
Wow! Thanks for the awesome home beauty tips! I will have to try them out! Yay!!!
WOW! You are amazing. I have not spa tricks, home brewed or otherwise. I am a mess!
